HELENA, Mont. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $2.4 million in disaster assistance to Montanans affected by flooding.
As of Wednesday, August 3, the following is a summary of federal assistance to individuals in counties affected by the flooding from April 4- July 22, 2011:
- $2,428,908 in total housing and other needs has been approved.
- Of that amount, $2,274,260 has been approved for housing expenses, including temporary rental assistance, home repair costs and assistance toward replacing destroyed homes.
- $154,648 has been approved as "Other Needs Assistance" to cover essential disaster-related needs, such as medical expenses and damaged personal property.
- 763 home inspections have been completed.
- Number of applicants registered with FEMA total 1,020.
Montanans are encouraged to register as soon as possible for disaster assistance. Once an individual registers, FEMA sends an inspector to assess damages. Registrants need to be sure to give a reliable phone number so the inspector can call to schedule an appointment.
FEMA encourages registration to be done from home, or where there is easy access to personal and financial information, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. Registration can also be done by going online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
After registering for assistance, registrants may receive an application for a low-interest Small Business Administration (SBA) loan. Recovering from a disaster is a process that includes a combination of personal insurance, FEMA disaster assistance and potentially a low-interest SBA loan. Even if you have insurance, you should apply with FEMA and the SBA.
Completing an SBA low-interest disaster loan application is an essential step in recovery. Housing assistance is not dependent on filling out an SBA loan application. However, an applicant must complete an SBA loan application to be eligible for additional assistance under the Other Needs Assistance (ONA) program that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
The SBA may lend up to $200,000 to repair or replace homes and up to $40,000 to renters and homeowners to repair or replace personal property. Also, up to $2 million may be available for businesses for their uncompensated disaster losses. Completing and returning the SBA application is an essential step in the process of being considered for other forms of disaster assistance.
President Obama amended Montana's disaster declaration on July 26 to include individual assistance for 16 Montana counties and three reservations including: Big Horn, Blackfeet Reservation, Carbon, Cascade, Crow Reservation, Custer, Fergus, Fort Belknap Reservation, Garfield, Hill, Jefferson, Judith Basin, Lewis and Clark, Missoula, Musselshell, Petroleum, Sweet Grass, Valley and Yellowstone.
The Small Business Administration (SBA) is the federal government's primary source of money for the long-term rebuilding of disaster-damaged private property. SBA helps homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private, nonprofit organizations fund repairs and rebuilding efforts, and cover the cost of replacing lost or disaster-damaged personal property. These disaster loans cover losses not fully compensated by insurance or other recoveries and do not duplicate benefits of other agencies or organizations.
