DENTON, Texas -- On June 6, President Obama signed a disaster declaration for seven Oklahoma Counties that were hit hard by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that occurred May 22-25.
Since then, some 960 Oklahoma households and businesses have registered for assistance. More than $8 million has been approved for eligible applicants.
Housing Assistance accounts for more than $2 million of the total, which includes grants to help pay for rent and home repair or replacement. More than $568,000 has been approved for Other Needs Assistance -- which includes grants for the repair or replacement of personal property, as well as reimbursements for medical, dental and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance.
Caddo, Canadian, Delaware, Grady, Kingfisher, Logan, McClain and Ottawa counties have been designated as eligible for Individual Assistance.
Homeowners, renters and business owners in these counties may apply for disaster assistance by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for the hearing or speech impaired. To apply online, go to www.disasterassistance.gov. The deadline to register for disaster assistance is Aug. 5, 2011.
Disaster assistance may include grants from FEMA to help individuals pay for rent and home repairs, replace personal property and reimburse medical, storage and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance. Assistance may also be available from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in the form of low-interest loans.
The SBA has approved more than $6.6 million in federal disaster loans to Oklahoma residents and businesses affected by the disaster.
SBA offers low-interest, federal disaster loans for homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and private, nonprofit organizations for their uncompensated losses. Homeowners may borrow up to $200,000 to repair or replace their primary residence. Homeowners and renters may borrow up to $40,000 to replace personal property. Businesses may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace their property damage and/or economic losses.
