Pettis County Residents Have Until July 14 to File For Disaster Unemployment Benefits

Columbia, Mo. -- Survivors who live or work in Pettis County may be eligible for unemployment insurance benefits under the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program activated by the state's May 9, 2011, presidential disaster declaration.

Applications must be filed by July 14, 2011, to be considered for benefits.

Income compensation under DUA is extended to self-employed civilians, farm workers, individuals who have worked for only a few weeks, and others who have lost earned income or whose income has been interrupted as a result of a major disaster. The benefits cover those usually not entitled to unemployment insurance.

"This is not regular unemployment compensation, but a program to help people who lost their jobs or cannot work because of the disaster," said Federal Coordinating Officer Libby Turner, the federal official in charge of the Missouri disaster recovery.

Applicants need to provide proof of past earnings, such as business records or bank statements and their most recent income tax statement, at the time they file their claim.

FEMA's temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
