COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced today it will have specialists available at the Joplin Independent Living Center (TILC) to provide disaster assistance information to disaster survivors with functional needs who may not be able to access a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC). Specialists will be at the TILC, located at 2639 E. 34th St., on Monday and Tuesday, June 20 and 21, 2011 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The primary goal of the Joplin TILC is to help individuals with disabilities maintain their independence in the least restrictive environment possible. In response to the escalated need for services since the recent tornado, the TILC is serving as the catalyst for collaboration between multiple agencies concerned with meeting the needs of those individuals. Resources available at The Independent Living Center include Durable Medical Equipment, equipment for individuals who have vision loss, and assistive technology services including adaptive telephone/computer equipment, recycled/refurbished equipment, and UbiDuo communications devices for people with hearing loss.

Bringing FEMA specialists to the TILC is one more example of the whole community working together to provide survivors with equal access to disaster assistance.

Individuals visiting the TILC on Monday and Tuesday will have the opportunity for face-to-face conversations with FEMA specialists to get answers to their disaster assistance questions and to learn what disability services they may be able to access.
