BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A new disaster recovery center opened in Piedmont, Cherokee County, to help those whose homes or businesses were affected by the recent storms and tornadoes in Alabama. The center will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. through May 12 at the following address:

Due to the short time-span of this disaster recovery center's operation, residents are encouraged to visit the facility as soon as possible to learn about and apply for disaster assistance programs.
Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Alabama Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Small Business Administration and other agencies will staff the center to explain disaster assistance programs and help survivors apply for assistance.
More centers will open soon in other counties designated for federal assistance.
Survivors can find the closest center by using the online disaster recovery center locator at http://go.usa.gov/CDc, the FEMA helpline (800-621-FEMA), or m.fema.gov for Web-enabled devices or smartphones.
If possible, before going to a disaster recovery center, those with storm-related losses should register with FEMA by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or by smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Those with a speech or hearing impairment may call (TTY) 800-462-7585.
Federal disaster assistance can include grants for rental assistance and home repairs, low-interest loans from the SBA for property losses and other programs to help recover from the effects of the disaster.
