ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mitigation specialists are in North Carolina assisting residents as a result of the severe storms and flooding from Tropical Storm Nicole.

Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 27, they will staff an informational table at Lowe’s in New Bern, offering advice and publications on how to rebuild smarter and stronger.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through Nov. 1 at the following location:

Craven County

New Bern, NC 28562

Beginning Thursday, Oct. 28, they open mitigation outreach locations in Winterville and Jacksonville. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the following locations:

Pitt County
Lowe's

Winterville, NC 28590

Onslow County
Lowe's
1255 Western Blvd.
Jacksonville, NC 28546

FEMA mitigation specialists can provide residents with information on ways to repair or improve their homes to reduce or prevent future disaster damages.

Those techniques include reducing mold and mildew; protecting electrical systems, furnaces, and other appliances; reinforcing structures against high winds, and flooding and securing important personal property. Information on flood insurance is also available.

Free reference booklets are available both in English and Spanish. No registration is required and there is no limit on the number of times someone can visit with a specialist or on the number of publications they can have.

Mitigation specialists are located in all 10 Disaster Recovery Centers. Information is also available at www.fema.gov/rebuild/recover/resources.
