DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. -- Only three weeks remain to apply for disaster assistance for this summer’s floods. Homeowners, renters and businesses with damages from the severe storms and flooding that occurred July 19 – Aug. 7 and located in one of the seven counties designated for federal assistance may be eligible for federal and state aid. The deadline to apply is Oct. 18, 2010.
Officials at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency (IEMA) encourage residents in Carroll, Cook, DuPage, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson, and Winnebago counties to apply for assistance as soon as possible.
Disaster assistance may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repair and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources.
Individuals are encouraged to apply for federal assistance by completing an application online anytime at www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling toll-free 1 800-621-FEMA (3362), or TTY 1-800-462-7585. FEMA operators are available from 7 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily until further notice. Help is available in a wide variety of languages.
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also has a deadline of Oct. 18 for homeowners, renters and businesses to return SBA applications. SBA can offer low-interest loans to repair real estate and replace damaged personal property, including automobiles. However, there is no obligation to take the loan if one is offered. Officials stress the importance of returning the SBA application as soon as possible. Homeowners and renters who cannot afford a loan may be referred back to FEMA for possible additional assistance.
Low-interest SBA loans are the largest source of disaster assistance. SBA disaster loan information may be obtained by calling the SBA’s Customer Service Center at 1-800-659-2955 or TTY 1 800-877-8339 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by e-mailing email@example.com. Apply online at SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/. For more information about the SBA disaster loan program, visit the SBA website at www.sba.gov
