CLINTON, Miss. -- Today is the last day for survivors of the April 23-24 Mississippi tornadoes and severe storms to register for state and federal assistance.

People in eight disaster-affected counties can register by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 800-462-7585 for the speech and hearing impaired. Phone lines are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and help is available in all languages.

Online registrations can be submitted to www.disasterassistance.gov.

The designated counties are Attala, Choctaw, Holmes, Monroe, Oktibbeha, Union, Warren and Yazoo.

About 1,900 people have already applied for assistance, and approximately $5 million in federal aid has been made available to families, individuals and businesses.

Eligible storm survivors may get FEMA assistance with uninsured or underinsured home repairs, temporary housing and other serious disaster-related needs.

Today also is the last day to apply for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Homeowners can borrow up to $200,000 to repair or replace their primary residence.  Homeowners and renters can borrow up to $40,000 to replace personal property.

Business owners can borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets.  SBA also provides small business owners access to Economic Injury Loans that provide money for ongoing business expenses to recover from the adverse economic impact of a disaster.  Economic Injury Disaster Loans are available even if the business didn’t sustain physical damages.

To obtain SBA loan information and applications, homeowners and renters in the designated Mississippi counties should call the SBA Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955, e-mail disastercustomerservice@sba.gov, or visit www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance. Loan applications can also be made online at the SBA’s secure website: disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.
