CLINTON, Miss. -- The deadlines to apply for federal disaster grants and low-interest loans are fast approaching for disaster survivors who live in 13 Mississippi counties, recovery officials said today.
Survivors affected by the April 23-24 tornadoes have just two weeks to register their damages with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and to return applications for low-interest loans for physical damages to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Those who live in counties designated for federal assistance following the May 1-2 storms and flooding have less than a month.
June 28 is the final day to register for people living in Attala, Choctaw, Holmes, Monroe, Oktibbeha, Union, Warren, and Yazoo counties. July 13 is the deadline for Alcorn, Benton, Lafayette, Tippah, and Tishomingo counties.
Disaster survivors should register with FEMA, if they haven’t already, by visiting www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 800-462-7585. Phone lines
are open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. CDT, and help is available in all languages.
Disaster survivors eligible for FEMA grants may get help for uninsured or underinsured home repairs, temporary housing, personal property and other serious disaster-related needs.
Homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private non-profits can reach the SBA Customer Service Center at 800-659-2955, TTY 800-877-8339. Representatives are available 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. CDT, Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CDT Saturdays. Loan applications can also be made online at the SBA’s secure website: disasterloan.sba.gov/ela/.
If disaster survivors receive an SBA loan application, they should complete and return it by the deadline to ensure they’re considered for all forms of assistance. After application review, the SBA may refer some home loan applicants back to FEMA for possible further grant assistance.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance and grants for public transportation expenses, medical and dental expenses, and funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to SBA loan officers to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
