BEAVER, W. Va. -- May 28 is the deadline to register for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance or to apply for a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan.
Homeowners, renters and business owners in Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Mercer and Raleigh counties who suffered losses as a result of the March storms and flooding have one week left to apply for disaster help.
The FEMA toll-free registration number is 800-621-FEMA (3362). The TTY number is 800-462-7585 for callers with speech or hearing disabilities. Registration is also possible online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov.
“We want West Virginians affected by the disaster to call or go online to begin the process before it’s too late,” said State Coordinating Officer Jimmy Gianato, Director of the West Virginia Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.
If you have already registered and have questions or need to provide additional information to FEMA, call the same toll-free number and press the Helpline option.
Whether you go online to register or talk with a teleregistration representative from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, have the following information ready:
- Name and Social Security number
- Address of the damaged property
- Current address and telephone number
- Insurance information
- Total household annual income
- Bank account information for direct deposit
- Description of your losses caused by the disaster
"Keep in touch with FEMA if you move or have any questions about your disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free number and pressing the Helpline option," Federal Coordinating Officer Terry L. Quarles said.
If you get an SBA loan application in the mail after you apply with FEMA, be sure to complete and return it to the SBA. Completing the loan application does not commit you to a loan; it is part of the federal financial disaster assistance process.

President Obama’s March 29 major disaster declaration for West Virginia made federal funding available to affected individuals in Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, Mercer and Raleigh counties. Assistance for homeowners and renters can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs. Homeowners and renters, nonprofit organizations and businesses of all sizes may also be eligible for U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans to repair or replace real and personal property.
FEMA’s housing assistance and grants for disaster-related medical and dental expenses, funeral and burial expenses do not require individuals to apply for an SBA loan. However, applicants who receive SBA loan applications must submit them to the SBA to be eligible for assistance that covers personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, and moving and storage expenses.
