FORT MONMOUTH, NJ -- Unfortunately, flooding is a fact of life for many New Jerseyans. To prevent losses due to flooding, the Federal Emergency Management Agency recommends homeowners, renters and businesses make an annual review of their insurance policies, update as necessary, and be sure premiums remain paid in full.
Now is the perfect time to review those policies. Floodwaters can threaten homes and businesses. Flooding throughout the spring and after an intense storm can cause hundreds of millions of dollars in damage.
Flood damage is not covered under standard homeowner insurance policies. A flood insurance policy through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) offers New Jersey residents their best protection against flood loss.
Flood insurance is available to homeowners, businesses, personal, and commercial renters. Personal policies offer up to $250,000 building coverage for property owners and up to $100,000 contents coverage for homeowners and tenants. Business coverage offers up to $500,000 building coverage for property owners and up to $500,000 contents coverage for business owners and tenants.
For more information contact your insurance agent or to find an insurance agent near you who sells flood insurance, visit www.floodsmart.gov, or call the NFIP's toll-free number 1-888-FLOOD29. The hearing- or speech-impaired should call TTY 1-800-427-5593.
FEMA’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
