FEMA Obligates $4.2 Million To Pasadena For Debris Removal

TEXAS CITY, Texas -- The city of Pasadena will receive a $4.2 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to reimburse it for costs to clean up debris following Hurricane Ike.

The $4,213,271 Public Assistance grant will allow Pasadena to pay contractors who removed and disposed of mixed debris left in Ike's wake. Because the project involved debris removal, the FEMA grant covers 100 percent of the city's cost.

"FEMA's commitment to helping Texans clean up their communities after Ike remains strong," said Federal Coordinating Officer Brad Harris. "Clearing roadways of piles of debris was a major step in Pasadena's recovery effort."

"The city of Pasadena did a good job managing debris removal after Hurricane Ike," said State Coordinating Officer Ben Patterson. "The cleanup work was both time-consuming and costly. These federal Public Assistance  funds will provide important financial support to the city." 

Once FEMA reimburses the state of Texas it is the state's responsibility to manage the funds, which includes making disbursements to local jurisdictions and organizations that incurred costs. The obligated funds are a portion of more than $1.3 billion in total Public Assistance disaster funds sent to the state since September 2008. Including assistance to individuals and families, federal assistance to Texas for the Hurricane Ike recovery effort tops $2.5 billion.
