BILOXI, Miss. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency and Mississippi Emergency Management Agency employees at the Mississippi Recovery Office contributed 4,025 pounds of food to Loaves and Fishes Family Kitchen in Biloxi Aug. 31.

Monday's donation marked the third and final food drive of the summer. In June, the MSRO began taking part in "Warm Up to Giving", a federal government-wide food drive with the goal of giving one million pounds of food to charities across the country.

"Loaves and Fishes plays an important role in serving the local community," said Alec Watson, the MSRO's acting director. "We hope this donation will help make a difference in the great work they are doing."

According to Rita Baldwin, executive director of Loaves and Fishes, the MSRO donation will help provide meals to those in need for approximately one month.

"We are very blessed and very grateful to FEMA and other groups who have taken care of us," Baldwin said. "September is Hunger Action Month. So, this is a good time to let people know hunger is not just in other countries and areas. It is right here in our own neighborhoods."

In addition to the MSRO contribution, staff members at the FEMA Area Field Office in Clinton gave 1,359 pounds of food to Stewpot Community Services in Jackson. FEMA and MEMA employees in Mississippi gave a total of more than 9,000 pounds of food to various charities this summer.

"I am proud of the generosity of the employees of MEMA and FEMA," said MEMA Director Mike Womack. "These food drives are examples of how our staff give back to the communities they live and work in all year long."

In June, MSRO employees donated food to Twelve Baskets Food bank, a program of Catholic Social and Community Services, Inc. for the Diocese of Biloxi. The Lord is My Help Food Pantry and Kitchen in Ocean Springs was the beneficiary of donations collected in July.
