INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- Hoosier counties approved for Public Assistance (PA) have a valuable resource on the state of Indiana's Web site.

Eligible governmental entities, municipal authorities, and certain private nonprofit organizations have 30 days from the date their county was designated eligible for PA to submit a Request For Public Assistance (RPA) to state officials. Counties were previously given a 30 day extension to the earlier deadline. Since some counties were designated on different dates, those counties also have different deadlines to submit. For quick clarification and phone numbers for PA questions, check www.in.gov/gov/files/Approved_for_Public_Assistance.pdf.

To date, nearly 500 RPAs have been submitted, but officials from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) believe there are many other eligible agencies that have yet to apply. The request forms can be downloaded at www.in.gov/dhs. Fax the completed RPA to 317-598-8952. Applicants can contact their local emergency manager for more information.

PA funds for reimbursement or restoration are available in 43 Indiana counties: Adams, Bartholomew, Benton, Brown, Clay, Daviess, Decatur, Fountain, Franklin, Gibson, Greene, Hancock, Hendricks, Henry, Jackson, Jay, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Knox, Madison, Marion, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Ohio, Owen, Parke, Pike, Posey, Putnam, Randolph, Ripley, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan, Switzerland, Union, Vermillion, Vigo, Wabash, Washington and Wayne.

These funds are for expenses or damage incurred during the disaster and cover items such as debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair or replacement of roads, bridges, water control facilities, buildings, equipment, utilities, parks and other facilities.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
