MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have announced that a Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open in Hammond on Saturday to assist residents who suffered damage from severe storms and flooding that occurred in the area Aug. 15-27. In addition, the mobile Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) serving multiple Lake County locations is coming to more cities near you. Another DRC is already open in Gary. (Complete DRC list is attached.)

DRC staff can answer questions about registration for disaster assistance and hazard mitigation, help with low-interest U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan applications and provide information and contacts for other programs.

Officials strongly urge anyone wanting to visit a DRC to do so as soon as possible because all DRCs are scheduled to close on December 21.

Officials also remind applicants that filling out an SBA application is a necessary step to be considered for some forms of disaster aid, including possible additional grant assistance. The SBA will begin operations of Disaster Loan Outreach Centers on Dec. 26, to continue assisting Lake County residents with SBA loan applications.

Homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the severe storms and flooding are encouraged to register for assistance before visiting the DRC by calling the telephone registration line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) which is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. (local time) seven days a week.? For speech- or hearing-impaired applicants, the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585. Applicants also may register on-line at www.fema.gov.  Registering early will help applicants receive aid as quickly as possible.
