NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Only a few days remain for homeowners, renters, and business owners in Brooklyn and Queens who experienced damages from the August 8 storms and flooding to register for disaster assistance with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Friday, November 16, is the last day to register for disaster assistance.

"We don't want anyone who was a victim of the August 8 storm to lose out on help that will assist them with recovery and rebuilding," said Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson of FEMA. "It takes just a few minutes to register."

Various options for assistance become available once people register. Homeowners may be eligible for housing grants to repair or rebuild from disaster-related damages. Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) offer financial aid for home and business owners. Disaster unemployment assistance and tax assistance are also available.

As of November 2, more than $6.6 million has been approved in disaster grants and low-interest loans for homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered damages.

"As long as people register and get in the system by Friday, November 16, they remain eligible to see what state and federal assistance may be an option for them," said State Coordinating Officer John R. Gibb, Director of the New York State Emergency Management Office (SEMO).

Anyone affected by the August 8 storms can register for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired, from Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or going online at

After registering, people can visit an SBA-FEMA Recovery Center in Queens to meet face-to-face with disaster specialists. They can get answers to questions about their FEMA application and get help in filling out an SBA low-interest loan package.
