One Month Left To Register For Disaster Assistance

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Those who suffered losses or damages as a result of the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding May 20-June 1, and live or have a business in the counties declared disaster areas by President Bush under the May 25, 2004 declaration, have one month left to apply for disaster assistance.

The deadline for individuals and businesses to register for assistance;
close of business, July 24, 2004.

Nebraska counties declared for individual assistance include: Adams, Buffalo, Butler, Cass, Clay, Dodge, Douglas, Fillmore, Franklin, Gage, Hall, Hamilton, Jefferson, Johnson, Lancaster, Kearney, Nuckolls, Otoe, Pawnee, Saline, Sarpy, Saunders, Seward, Thayer, Washington, Webster and York.

The US Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) may provide assistance to an uninsured or underinsured household to be safely housed and to cover necessary expenses and serious needs following the effects of a disaster. Assistance for Housing may be in the form of funds to obtain alternate rental housing; to make essential repairs required to make the residence habitable, or funds toward the replacement of a disaster-damaged home. Assistance for Other Needs may be provided for necessary expenses and serious needs such as personal property, transportation, medical and dental expenses and funeral costs.

"The registration deadline is quickly approaching. We encourage those who need disaster aid to apply now," said State Coordinating Officer Cindy Newsham. "Help is only a telephone call away."

Those who still need to apply for assistance may register by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for the speech or hearing impaired. The registration lines are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Helpline continues to be available for those wanting an update on their application or to modify their application.

"Those who need disaster help should register now," said Federal Coordinating Officer Scott Wells. "As the registration deadline approaches, we want to be sure that we have reached everyone who needs help and that no one is left out."
