San Juan, P.R. -- Commonwealth and Federal disaster recovery officials announced today that the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) will remain closed from December 25 through 27, in observance of the Christmas holidays. Nevertheless, the DRCs will resume its operations on Monday, December 29, 2003 at 9 a.m.
Additionally, the FEMA Tele-registration line, 1-800-621-3362, will be closed December 25-27, 2003. The line will be resuming its operation on Monday, December 29 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. As of December 22, 2003, a total of 40,101 individuals have applied for disaster assistance and $37,858,372 has been approved to the affected individuals under FEMA’s disaster assistance programs.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
