Pago Pago, American Samoa -- The American Samoa Government and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Helpline is now available to applicants by calling (800) 621-3362. Speech and hearing impaired individuals may call TTY (800) 462-7585. Effective Oct. 17, 2003, the local toll-free transfer number will no longer be available.
The Helpline is available for those individuals who suffered damages from the May 19-21 heavy flooding and landslides and who already registered for assistance. Applicants can check on the status of their application, update their FEMA registration, and get answers to their questions. Samoan speaking operators are available should applicants want to converse in Samoan.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
