New Castle, DE?The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free disaster numbers begin new hours effective Monday October 6, 2003. People who suffered damage or loss of work from Tropical Storm Henri September 15 or Hurricane Isabel, September 18 through September 29, but who have not applied, should call the teleregistration number to begin the recovery process. FEMA?s teleregistration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). For the hearing or speech impaired, the TTY teleregistration is 1-800-462-7585. The teleregistration telephone number is available 7 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) seven days a week.
FEMA also is available to answer applicant questions by calling the same toll-free number from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. seven days a week.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
