More Than 100 Calls Received On Final Day; Nearly $32 Million Approved In Disaster Assistance For Missourians

Springfield, MO -- More than 100 Missourians called to apply for disaster assistance yesterday - the final day that the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) toll-free number was available to accept applications. Nearly $32 million in state and federal assistance has already been approved for more than 2,300 claims from Missourians who were affected by the devastating tornadoes, severe storms and flooding which began on May 4.

Federal and state disaster officials offer the following 60-day summary of assistance efforts to date:

  • 6,714 individuals in 74 disaster-declared Missouri counties have applied for federal and state assistance, including 109 calls yesterday and more than 250 during the final week.

  • $31,717,848 approved in grants and low-interest loans for more than 2,300 Missourians

    • $3,804,022 approved in Housing Assistance grants for temporary rental assistance and minimal home repairs

    • $3,861,525 approved in Other Needs Assistance grants for necessary expenses and serious needs caused by the disaster.

    • $24,052,300 approved in U.S. Small Business Administration in low-interest loans, including 571 home loans ($19,882,100) and 137 business loans ($4,170,200)

  • Crisis Counseling services are available through the Missouri Department of Mental Health. Those interested in crisis counseling should call 800-494-7355 or 800-811-4760.

  • The Internal Revenue Service provides special tax relief for disaster affected Missouri taxpayers. For more information, call 800-829-1040.

  • For information about U.S. Department of Agriculture disaster assistance programs, farmers and ranchers should contact their local USDA offices.

  • For information about Disaster Legal Services, including assistance with insurance claims, landlord/tenant and other housing problems, home repair contracts, and replacement of legal documents, call 888-234-5695.

Individuals or business owners who need to provide additional information concerning their application can call FEMA's Helpline at 800-621-FEMA (3362) and select "Option 3." For the hearing or speech impaired, the TTY number is 800-462-7585. The Helpline is available 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. Multi-lingual operators are available.
