Nashville, TN -- Tennesseans are jumping at the chance to protect themselves from future disasters.

More than 3,000 people have visited a series of safety demonstrations, offered by state and federal mitigation specialists to show how to reduce or prevent damages caused by tornadoes, flooding and severe storms.

The demonstrations are being staged at home improvement stores throughout the state, concentrating in areas that had severe damage from May's tornadoes and storms.

In Madison County, the county hardest hit by the tornadoes, more than 2,600 residents have attended the demonstrations, which cover topics like building safe rooms to protect against storms and flood-proofing homes or other structures.

"While more than 10,000 people have applied for assistance since the current Tennessee disasters, just about all of Tennessee's 5.7 million residents are vulnerable to natural disasters," said Michael Bolch, the official in charge of federal recovery operations. "The state and FEMA hope to show as many people as possible how to reduce the toll in the future."

The demonstrations, which are continuous during store hours, are scheduled to continue for another four weeks, with the last one closing July 13.
