Baton Rouge, LA -- State and federal disaster recovery officials said that hard-hit residents of 10 parishes deluged by Tropical Storm Isidore and Hurricane Lili can now apply for emergency food stamps through a program run by the Louisiana Department of Social Services, Office of Family Support.

The emergency program is available for eligible individuals and households in Acadia, Avoyelles, Evangeline, Iberia, Jefferson Davis, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary and Vermilion parishes. The food stamps can be used to purchase food at local grocery stores.

Current food stamp recipients do not need to apply for the emergency funds, officials said. Existing accounts have been credited with emergency funds electronically.

A food stamp worker will determine each new applicant's eligibility based on the applicant's available cash resources and net monthly income related to household size.

The basic eligibility thresholds are: less than $2,000 in cash reserves, or $3,000 if a member of the household is elderly or disabled, and a maximum of $739 in net monthly income plus $257 for each additional eligible household member.

New applicants should apply for emergency food stamps at the office in the parish where they live. They will need to bring identification, proof of home address (driver's license, utility bill, etc.) as well as the Social Security numbers of everyone in the household who has one. Applicants will also be asked some questions relating to income, household expenses and disaster-related expenses.

Applications will be taken through October 15, 2002 at the following locations (All centers are open from 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.:
