Mesa, AZ -- Residents who sustained losses or damage as a result of the Rodeo-Chediski fire have less than three weeks to visit the State/Federal Help Centers in Heber and Show Low, federal and state disaster recovery officials reminded residents today.

The center locations are:

  • Heber - Capps Middle School, 3375 Buckskin Canyon Road.
  • Show Low - primary school, 1350 North Central Avenue.

"These two help centers will be operating through Monday, August 26," said Arizona Division of Emergency Management (ADEM) Director Michael P. Austin. "August 26 is also the deadline to apply for federal assistance for disaster-related losses." Disaster victims can register for assistance by calling toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Individuals with hearing or speech impairments can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

"Even after these centers close, FEMA is still only a telephone call away," said Federal Coordinating Officer Sandy Coachman. "People can still call the toll-free line to get information about assistance programs or find out the status of their FEMA applications," said Coachman.

The centers are staffed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Arizona Division of Emergency Management, and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Disaster assistance programs include housing assistance, grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by insurance or other programs, and low-interest loans from the SBA. Tax assistance and other special services are also available to eligible persons affected by the disaster. The centers are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

FEMA's disaster assistance is intended to cover basic needs and necessary expenses and in most cases will not compensate individuals for their entire loss. For instance, federal law limits housing assistance to losses associated with a person's primary residence and precludes secondary homes. Disaster assistance is like a safety net; it is intended to assist those affected by the disaster on their road to recovery.

Individuals and businesses who are still completing SBA disaster loan applications, and who have questions or need assistance, can call SBA customer service at 1-800-488-5323.
