San Juan, PR -- Residents who sustained losses or damage as a result of the May 6 - 11 floods and mudslides have until the close of business on June 22 to visit FEMA/commonwealth Disaster Recovery Centers in Guayanilla, San Germán, Lajas, and Sabana Grande federal and commonwealth disaster recovery officials announced today.
"But even after the centers close, FEMA will be as close as a telephone call away," said Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. "The deadline for residents to apply for disaster assistance is July 15."
The only way to register for disaster assistance is to call the toll-free number at 1-800-462-9029. Hearing or speech impaired individuals may call TTY 1-800-462-7585. The Centers will not be taking applications, but there are phones available to residents who are without phone service.
"To find out about assistance programs or the status of your application, registered applicants can call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321" said Hernández.
Disaster assistance programs include housing assistance, grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by insurance or other programs, and low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for damaged residential and business property.
The hours of the following mobile DRCs are from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. and located in the following locations:
