San Juan, PPR -- Starting June 16, 2001, all the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) and the mobile DRCs will be open Monday through Friday for residents affected by the May floods. The National Teleregistration Center will also operate from Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for residents who wish to register for disaster assistance.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico established three centers and three mobile centers to help flood victims who may have questions concerning disaster assistance programs. Though the centers are not taking applications, the DRCs have phones available for residents who need to call the toll-free registration line.
"The only way to register for federal disaster assistance is by calling 1-800-462-9029," said Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. Hearing and speech impaired individuals may call TTY at 1-800-462-7585.
Some disaster programs include temporary housing assistance, individual and family grants, and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans. Written materials about various assistance programs also are available to individuals and business owners.
