San Juan, PR -- Officials from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will open a mobile Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) on June 7 in Lajas to assist individuals affected by the May floods. The DRC will operate from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
"The mobile center has been set up to provide information about disaster assistance programs. Though the center will not be taking applications, there will be phones available to residents who do not have phone service", said Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. "The only way to register for federal disaster assistance is by calling 1-800-462-9029". Hearing and speech impaired individuals may call TTY at 1-800-462-7585.
Some disaster programs include temporary housing assistance, individual and family grants, and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans. Written materials about various assistance programs also are available to individuals and business owners.
There will be representatives from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico programs such as the Department of Family, Department of Agriculture, Crisis Counseling, and the Department of Housing. "This is a great opportunity for individuals to sit down with different agencies and get all of their questions answered concerning the recovery process," said the Governor's Authorized Representative, Melba Acosta.
The center will remain open until June 23.
