Seattle, WA -- The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is home to the Alaska Earthquake Information Center (AEIC), and Dr. Roger Hansen. Dr. Hansen is the Alaska State Seismologist and Director of the Seismology Lab at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. This facility collects data from more than 300 seismic sites from around the state; it also integrates and processes the data from the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center and the Alaska Volcano Observatory in addition to an extensive network of other agencies and research centers. The AEIC partners with both federal and state officials by providing the most current information including the earthquake's location and size within 30 minutes of the event. Their cataloged data is fundamental to the process of furthering seismic hazard studies. Dr. Hansen's team leads the way to further define seismic source zones and the level of seismicity in a given area. Their work is allowing everyone to better understand earthquakes not only in Alaska, but the rest of the country as well.
