San Juan, PR -- Starting June 3, 2001, all the Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) and the mobile DRCs will be open Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for residents affected by the May floods.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico established three centers and two mobile centers last week to assist individuals. The DRCs have been set up to provide answers about disaster assistance programs. The DRCs have phones available for residents who do not have phone service to call into the toll-free registration line.
"The only way to register for federal disaster assistance is by calling 1-800-462-9029," said Justo Hernández, federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort. Hearing and speech impaired individuals may call TTY at 1-800-462-7585.
Some disaster programs include temporary housing assistance, individual and family grants, and U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest disaster loans. Written materials about various assistance programs also are available to individuals and business owners.
