DANBURY, Conn. -- Homeowners, renters and business owners in Fairfield and Hartford counties with damage and losses from Tropical Storm Floyd have until November 22 to register for federal/state disaster assistance, recovery officials said today.
Federal Coordinating Officer Sharon L. Stoffel urges those who have not already done so to register for assistance without delay so that this deadline does not pass them by. "The number to call is 1-800-462-9029, 1-800-462-7585 (TTY) for the hearing and speech impaired. Both toll-free lines are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., seven days a week until further notice," she said.
Applicants may qualify for assistance under federal and state programs that include grants to help pay for temporary housing, minor home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) are also available to cover residential and business losses not fully compensated by insurance.
"Don't let the registration period expire while you are waiting for insurance or other settlements," State Coordinating Officer John T. Wiltse said. "Apply before the deadline to protect your eligibility."
