KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Beginning Tuesday, June 22, Kansans will be able to get specific information from disaster-prevention advisors on how to build disaster-resistant structures or rooms in their homes to provide better family protection from tornadoes.

Recovery specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Kansas Division of Emergency Management (KDEM) said that teams of mitigation advisors this week will visit 19 cities throughout the state to help spread the message that these structures or rooms, called safe rooms, can save lives when severe weather strikes again.

The mitigation advisors, who will be on hand from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at each location, will be distributing publications and providing general construction techniques to help Kansans choose the right shelter for their particular situation.

"When built according to proven design plans, safe rooms offer increased protection against winds of up to 250 miles per hour and projectiles traveling at 100 miles a hour," said Charles E. Biggs, FEMA Federal Coordinating Officer.

Terri Ploger, Kansas State Coordinating Officer added, "Tornadoes are a fact of life in Kansas. We encourage all Kansans to take advantage of this valuable opportunity to receive information on providing for their safety."
