Volunteer group, Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Relief, watches children at Disaster Recovery Centers while their parents receive information about FEMA or other disaster assistance programs. Mary Bess Jackson Southern Baptist Volunteer In Texas it started in 1979, they started the first child care unit and we go out in disasters and help take care of children so their parents can do the paper work and the business they have to do to recover from the disaster. Southern Baptist Volunteer Wait just a minute I just have to figure out how to spell your last name. Mary Bess Jackson Southern Baptist Volunteer We take care of babies to six year olds. We have toys for them to play with, we have books that we read to them, we have puzzles, games. They need attention to. We have other groups. We have feeding units here, we have mud out units, chainsaw units. There’s just all kinds of disaster relief that we do and this particular thing focuses on helping the families with their children while they can get the paper work and all the things they have to do. I just enjoy doing it. I guess you might say it’s a mission for me. It’s just a way to give back to God because he’s blessed me.
