Bolivar Peninsula, TX May 2009 To restore the unique character of Bolivar Peninsula, local leaders and citizens are working together to plan for their Long-Term community recovery. John Simsen Emergency Management Coordinator Galveston County The blue print process is a wonderful opportunity for the community to come together, share ideas, bounce good ideas and bad ideas of off each other and actually help lay the ground work to rebuild their community. Claude Kahla Bolivar Blueprint I am amazed at everything thats happening here on the peninsula, everything begins to take shape. John Simsen Emergency Management Coordinator Galveston County Is not local government telling them how to rebuild their community is not state or federal government leading them down a road that they may not want to take, its, its its driven by the local community and by the local citizens so thats what the process is all about. Claude Kahla Bolivar Blueprint All of the various comities are working very well we are getting some good information, some good input from our meetings here, and I think its going to work out very well if we pursue some of the things that there is existing and try to work on them, I think itll really, really benefit our peninsula. John Simsen Emergency Management Coordinator Galveston County We have weekly steering comity meetings and recently launched our first wide scale sub-comity meeting, each of the steering comity members shares one of the sub-comities, and the sub-comities it self are representative of different issues that the people have brought up, that can be environmental, it could be infrastructure, could be health and human services and each of those sub-comities is kind of drawing public input, and public ideas to help come up with those projects, Honorable Patrick Doyle Commissioner Precinct 1 Each of the comities on their own have brought some really good ideas to the table, and one again that buy in, you know that they are part of the process and the final product. John Simsen Emergency Management Coordinator Galveston County Even though we call it the Long-Term recovery process we are really focusing on the things that we can do in the next couple of years that will establish the community as something thats going to be enduring for a long time. We see the Blueprint as an opportunity to really capitalize on some of the grant funding opportunities that are coming down. Honorable Patrick Doyle Commissioner Precinct 1 Its a great vision statement I think it says a lot about this community and where we are going Voice of: Honorable Patrick Doyle Commissioner Precinct 1 A rebuilt Bolivar Peninsula will be a resilient, affordable and safe place to live where residents and visitors enjoy nature and recreation in a diverse community of small businesses and families close to water and beaches. It will be built with respect for the environment and developed with sustainable land use, infrastructure and community services. For more information visit www.fema.gov
