Opening Slates: 1) March 2009 FEMA and the state of Texas open temporary community sites at Schreiber Field & High Island. 2) It's a temporary solution for eligible disaster victims of Hurricane Ike. 3) It gives families time to complete home repairs or to find a long-term housing alternative that is right for them. Transcript: Jim Persons This site is for construction of a mobile home site for people displaced by Hurrican Ike. The site is Schreiber Field located in Galveston, Texas. We are starting to clear the site in preparation for approximately 54 mobile homes. The next part of the process will be to do our underground work which will be the water and sewer, and then we will start doing the surface work, putting in the streets and placing the pads for the trailers. Sonny Motley We have another site over on Bolivar Peninsula that is a, has 50 units in it for housing. The site was a little bit different because it was all a wooded site. They had to take some trees out, do some special landscaping, that kind of thing, to get that up. These parks actually opened just about the same time. Even with the difference in the construction for the two. We started out this site sometime early February '09 and roughly thirty something days it was as you see now. But that's the way we stand right now. We're, stand ready to house the disaster victims from Ike. It's a very unique problem that we have here on the island, there is a lot of people that live very close together and because of this there were very few units that could go on private sites. So therefore this site is very valuable to allow us to offer housing for folks that meet the eligibility requirements on this island. Kerrie Zoisin Welcome home. Mattie Julius Thank you. My home is, was severely damaged. It was, my house itself was a brick house, but, I had like four feet of water in my house, and it took everything. I've been in Houston all this time trying to make it. Run down here back and forth, and me being a senior citizen, that's what hurts me most, is driving back and forth. Kerrie Zoisin This is a living kit, it has pillows, blankets, towels, dishes, just something to move in with, you know, silverware. Here???s some furniture. There's a lot of furniture in this one. They don't have closets but we have a little shelf where you can hang your clothes. Mattie Julius That's good. That's good.
