  • New Jersey's Liberty State Park has served a vital role in the development of the metropolitan region. At the heart of the park is the Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal (CRRNJ.) Over 1-hundred years ago, immigrants were greeted by the Statue of Liberty, processed at Ellis Island then boarded trains, at the CRRNJ Terminal, that took them to their new homes throughout the United States. As the railroads and industry declined, the land was abandoned and became a desolate dump site in the 1960's. In 1976, the train station was restored and reopened to the public providing ferry rides to New York. It was to be New Jersey's Bicentennial gift to the nation. But in October, 2012 Hurricane Sandy damaged the old train station and it has remained closed to the public. Now FEMA's Environmental and Historic Preservation will help restore the historic structure back to its pre-disaster condition and the old train station will once again be available to the public.
