The common area shown in front of the lifeguard station has been cleared of sand.
Sandy Hook, N.J., March 22, 2013 -- Progress is being made at the visitor center, which was virtually buried in sand caused by Hurricane Sandy last October. The National Park Service, which operates the park, is working to get at least a portion of the area opened for the 2013 summer season. Photo by Sharon Karr/FEMA
