NFIP Workshop in Old Lyme, Connecticut
Old Lyme, Conn., Nov. 29, 2011 -- David Knowles, a professional engineer in the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Region I Office of Risk Analysis Branch of the Mitigation Division, leads a class for more than 60 local officials during a National Flood Insurance Program Workshop in Old Lyme. Connecticut was declared a disaster on September 2, 2011 in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene that resulted in major river flooding. The four hour workshop was organized in partnership with the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection and the NFIP coordinator for the state. Topics included using flood insurance rate maps and studies, the role of the local floodplain manager, substantial improvement and damage, flood insurance, elevation certificates and variances.
