Environmental Assessments for Several Communication Tower Projects, State-wide, Mississippi (April 2011)
Following Hurricane Katrina, Congress appropriated funds for a grant to the State of Mississippi for an interoperable communications system. The funds are being administered by FEMA under the Mississippi Interoperable Communications Grant Program to be used for the construction of several communications towers across the state. The proposed telecommunications sites would be part of the Mississippi Wireless Integrated Network (MSWIN) project, which is intended to provide and enhance interoperable communications uses for a wide variety of government, public safety, and first-responder users. In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and FEMA’s regulations for implementing NEPA at 44 CFR Part 10, an Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared for each proposed tower site to evaluate the potential impacts of the proposed projects on the environment. FEMA has adopted the draft EAs prepared by a consultant to the MSWIN project.
