Environmental Assessment for Harriman State Park Fire Mitigation, Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation (September 2009)
The purpose of this action is to provide LPDM
funding to IDPR for wildfire mitigation activities as mandated by Congress in the reauthorization legislation for the Pre-Disaster Mitigation Program. IDPR identified Harriman State Park as a high priority area for funding under the LPDM. The
forest within and around Harriman State Park has been devastated by past insect and disease epidemics and a disruption of the natural wildland fire frequency through decades of fire suppression. These two factors have resulted in a significant buildup of combustible forest fuels far beyond natural levels, causing the forests within the park to be at risk for a severe wildfire event similar to what Yellowstone National Park experienced in 1988. The need for this action is to reduce the risk to people and property from wildfires in Harriman State Park.
