FEMA: Week in Review Louisiana Recovery Office Serving Recovery Needs from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita New Orleans, LA February 8, 2013 ANNOUNCEMENTS Final Recovery Meetings As part of an initiative to identify all remaining projects with scope of work or costs concerns that are impeding the applicant’s ability to move forward with their recovery from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, FEMA and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness have launched an outreach effort across the state. Over the past two months, more than 30 applicants have attended Final Recovery Meetings with the two agencies and more are scheduled for the future. During the meetings, applicants have been introduced to a new joint version tracking system designed to track the age and status of each individual version and provide transparency throughout the project worksheet process. The tracking tool will exist in the state’s Louisiana Public Assistance website, to which GOHSEP will provide access and any required training for both the applicant and FEMA. City of New Orleans Breaks Ground on Juvenile Justice Center The city of New Orleans broke ground on a new Juvenile Justice Center Tuesday, Feb. 5. The new justice complex will provide a safe and secure juvenile detention facility as well as a state-of-the-art building for those who work in the juvenile court system. For this recovery project, FEMA is funding $26 million in federal funding, which covers Hurricane Katrina-related damages identified through our recovery partnership with the city and the state. IMAT Pilot Program FEMA has launched a pilot program to expand the agency’s National and Regional Incident Management Assistance Teams. IMATs are a critical component of the FEMA disaster workforce, capable of being on the scene within hours of a disaster in support of local, tribal, territorial and state partners. The Pilot Program will create three new IMATs – two Type I National Teams in Sacramento, Calif., and Washington, D.C. and one new Type II Regional Team in Oakland, Calif — and includes an application process for 70 new positions.
