In 2010, over 2,900 grants were awarded across the U.S. and its territories to help ensure firefighters and first responders have the essentials they need to be safe and effective on the job. If your organization could benefit from basic inputs to ensure personnel and public safety - equipment, training, wellness and fitness programming or facilities modifications - then follow the example of previous grantees and apply for AFG funding. New Devices Offer Difference Between Life and Death (Redmond, OR) Redmond Fire & Rescue used part of their AFG grant to purchase video laryngoscopes with amonitoring device, which allow paramedics to more safely and effectively intubate patients. AFG-Bought Generator Supplies Uninterrupted Power During Natural Disaster (Wooster, OH) A loss of power usually resulted in service interruptions and delays for Wooster Township Fire Department. But thanks to an AFG award, even a category EF-2 tornado was unable to impede this department's rescue and recovery efforts at a critical juncture. Wellness Program Exposes Cancer, Save Firefighter's Life (Puyallup, WA) For a 26-year veteran of the City of Puyallup Fire and Rescue, whose health insurance did not cover annual physicals, the wellness program funded by AFG proved more than precautionary—it was a lifesaver. Volunteer Firefighters' Joint Effort Results in New Gear and Lives Saved (Lamar County, MS) For four volunteer fire departments in rural Mississippi who were forced to share tattered, worn out turnout gear because there wasn't enough to go around, an AFG grant meant the ability to outfit firefighters adequately, offer mutual aid, and perform rescue operations that save lives and property.
