Harness the Power of Hazus

MH to Reduce Community Risk 


Virtual training courses make it easy for users to harness the power of Hazus-MH to get a quantified and 
geospatial view of the potential risks your community faces. Once you know what could happen, your 
community can make informed decisions to prevent losses and protect its citizens. With online courses 
to serve varying interests and training needs, the Esri Virtual Campus series will help public and private 
organizations plan for and mitigate natural disasters. 

To access the courses, visit training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm and type ‘Hazus’ in the ‘Find Training’ 
search function. Once you are on the page listing all Hazus courses, select ‘10.0’ on the right-hand 
column for the ArcGIS 10 Version. 

Learn Hazus “Virtually” 

If a user completes the following twelve online courses listed, they may be used as a substitute for the 
4-day Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Basic Hazus-MH classroom course. We 
recommend that users take the courses in the following order for the best results:

2. Introduction to the Hazus-MH 2.0 Inventory 
3. Introduction to the Hazus-MH 2.0 Earthquake Model 
4. Loss Estimation Using the Hazus-MH 2.0 Earthquake Model 
5. Understanding Hazus-MH 2.0 Earthquake Model Results 
6. Introduction to the Hazus-MH 2.0 Flood Model 
7. Loss Estimation Using the Hazus-MH 2.0 Flood Model 
8. Understanding Hazus-MH 2.0 Flood Model Results 
9. Introduction to the Hazus-MH 2.0 Hurricane Model 
10. Loss Estimation Using the Hazus-MH 2.0 Hurricane Model 
11. Understanding Hazus-MH 2.0 Hurricane Model Results 
12. Introduction to the Hazus-MH 2.0 Storm Surge Model 


After completing these courses, a user should submit an email request along with a copy of each course 
certificate to Phillip Moore, the Hazus course manager at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute 
(EMI), at Phillip.Moore2@fema.gov. Mr. Moore tracks certificates and acknowledges completion of the 
virtual courses as a substitute for the 4-day E313: Basic Hazus-MH classroom course.

Classroom Training for Hazus-MH 

EMI also provides regularly scheduled Hazus classroom-based training classes at the National Emergency 
Training Center campus in Emmitsburg, Maryland, 75 miles north of Washington, DC. Courses provide 
hands-on training Hazus-MH tools, methodologies, and audience-specific applications (e.g., Flood Plain 
Managers). Students learn from experienced Hazus users and learn from their peers as well. Users may
