A Special Day

Mrs. Fletcher took a plastic tub off her desk. "Do you know what this is?" she asked.

Hands went up. They all knew it was a family disaster supply kit.

"What's inside?" she asked.

The students answered without raising their hands.

"Canned goods"

"Battery-powered flashlights and a radio."

"Bottled water."

"Good," said Mrs. Fletcher. "What else?"

"Medicine and important papers?" asked Julia.

Mrs. Fletcher nodded. "Now, how many of you have such a kit?"

and Robbie raised their hands. Not many of the other students did.

"That's your first job when you get home from school today," Mrs. Fletcher said. "Work with your parents to put together a family disaster kit."

She

picked up the tub to show that it wasn't too heavy. "You may need to take the kit with you if you need to evacuate," she said.
