Jess and Sam's Earthquake Activities: Experiment #2

If you are inside during an earthquake, it's important to take cover under a heavy piece of furniture for protection. To see why, try this experiment.

Jess and Sam IllustrationYou will need:

  • A shoe box
  • Small figures of people
  • Some toy furniture or furniture made from Lego or other interlocking materials
  • Small objects like paper clips or scraps of paper
  • Some rulers or strips of sturdy cardboard

Now:

  1. Put the figures in the shoe box.
  2. Put one figure in a safe place under a piece of toy furniture and the other in the middle of the box not protected by furniture
  3. Lay the rulers or cardboard strips over the top of the box
  4. Place the small objects on the rulers
  5. Shake the box and watch what happens when the small objects fall into the box.
  6. What happens to the figures?
  7. Think - where is the best place to go if you feel an earthquake?
