Essays and Stories from Manvel School
was a lot of damage to houses. Some houses were wiped out. In some houses,
just the basement was flooded. Candace, Rick and their sixth grader Brianne
have been in the flood. Luckily, just the basement was flooded. Their
basement has frogs in it. So Grand Forks residents watch out for those
frogs!

was an honor to
have President Clinton come to Grand Forks and see flood damages. President
Clinton also said, "If one person sand bags, the job will never get done
but together we're strong." He also said he was proud of Grand Forks because
we were working together and helping each other. The Red River reached
54.11 feet, which is 26 feet over flood stage. It has been an awful disaster.

community has been helped
tremendously by the National Guard and Coast Guard. They have aided us
in many ways. They helped evacuate people and their pets, reinforced and
built dikes, supplies transportation for local and national media purified
water and brought people back to their houses. We think the community
should show their gratitude by having a ceremony and honoring these people
for all their hard work.

came to the rescue for many evacuated people, by opening their hearts
and their homes. Everyone was happy to help out in this time of need.
Yet how sad it is that it takes something so tragic to reach out to our
neighbors. The Grand Forks Air Force Base has a shelter for anyone who
needs to stay there until the flood is over. Hundreds of people stayed
at the Air Force Base. People from Grand Forks are still stay there at
this time.

and watching the news and radio to see if they can get back in their houses.
They are gathering up some of their belongings. Some forgot things and
other did not have time to pack up things. Only some people can go to
their houses each day. Most people are already in their houses getting
the water pumped out. Some houses are totally under water and others only
have water in their basements. Some of their belongings are floating down
the river.

all started when
my mom woke me up and said we have to evacuate becaue the sewers are filling
up with water. So I got dressed and brushed my teeth and packed my stuff.
We were ready to go. Then we drove to Manvel to stay with my grandparents.
So here I am at Manvel School. I like it. It is kind of fun being at a
new school. There are many new kids and lots of other new people. Everyone
here has been very nice. Everything is OK. The flood is going away and
soon we'll be back home. But this will be my new schoool for the rest
of second grade.
