January 17, 1994. The Northridge Earthquake strikes Southern California, killing 57 people, injuring 9,000 and costing billions in recovery efforts. It was the worst earthquake in recent U.S. history.

January 17, 1995. An earthquake in Kobe, Japan, kills 6,300 people and causes more than $100 billion in damages.
