AUSTIN, Texas – Since Hurricane Ike’s landfall in Texas, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $8.3 million in individual assistance for renters and homeowners in Oak Island/Anahuac in Chambers County. That assistance is in the form of federal grants for temporary housing, home repair, other disaster-related needs and emergency supplies. Recent media reports indicated FEMA has done very little for this area. The following is provided to set the record straight:

In addition to the aid specific to Oak Island and Anahuac, Chambers County residents have also been approved for more than $8 million in low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and more than $8 million has been obligated for public assistance funding for debris removal and infrastructure repair. FEMA also was billed more than $1.7 million for displaced Chambers County residents temporarily living in hotels. FEMA and the state of Texas opened a total of eight disaster recovery centers in the county to provide face-to-face assistance. One center still remains open in Anahuac.
