The Business Continuity Institute recently named a FEMA Private Sector liaison as its “Public Sector Continuity Manager of the Year” recently.
Michael Cummings, Region IX Private Sector liaison, was honored at the Disaster Recovery Journal's 2012 Spring World conference in Orlando. BCI cited Cummings for his “outstanding work in helping coordinate strong and successful Public and Private Sector partnerships.”
Cummings was singled out from dozens of public sector nominees in recognition of his work since joining FEMA R-IX in January 2011, and for his successful outreach when serving as Private Sector liaison for the city and county of San Francisco for several years prior to joining FEMA.
According to nominator Barry Cardoza, Bay Area Response Coalition vice chair, Cummings was recognized for his efforts to practically implement FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate's doctrine of more aggressively involving the private sector, as part of a Whole Community approach, in disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
Cardoza also pointed to Cummings’ efforts at the local level to have Private Sector representation in the city/county Emergency Operations Center and the leveraging of financial sector resources as efforts that now serve as national models for such engagement.
