MEMORANDUM FOR: All Federal Emergency Management Agency Headquarters Employees
FROM: W. Craig Fugate, Administrator
SUBJECT: Special Observance for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Birthday
The National holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King is an occasion for joy and celebration for his life and his work toward non violent social change in America and the world. The commemorative theme for the observance is: "Sharing the Dream of Freedom and Equality for all." This holiday serves as a reminder that this is a day in which community service initiatives should take place−a day on, not just a day off from work or school.
FEMA is jointly sponsoring a special speaker to commemorate this event, with the Department of Health and Human Services, the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the Small Business Administration, the Department of Education, National Transportation Safety Board, and the US International Trade Commission. The program is planned for Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the Voice of America Auditorium, Cohen Building, 330 Independence Avenue S.W., Washington, D.C. 20237
The keynote speaker for this event is Rev. Dr. Michael Louis Pfleger, a German American from the South Side of Chicago, attended Archbishop Quigley Preparatory Seminary South, Loyola University and the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. He was ordained as priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1975. Since 1981, Dr. Plfleger has been pastor of the mostly African American parish of Saint Sabina, a Catholic church in Chicago’s auburn Gresham neighborhood. At the age of 31, he became the youngest pastor in the Chicago archdiocese. Under Dr. Pfleger leadership, Saint Sabina has established an Employment Resource Center, a Social Service Center, and also and Elders home.
Musical Guest, Howard University Gospel Choir.
I strongly encourage all employees, supervisors, and managers to attend this enriching program. Should you have questions or desire additional information, please contact Margie Floyd-Dove, Equal Employment Opportunity Specialist, at (202) 646-3676.
