This September will mark the eighth year for the DHS/FEMA Office of National Capital Region Coordination National Preparedness Month Outreach Program, Ready Campaign, and Citizen Corps to sponsor National Preparedness Month. National Preparedness Month is designed to educate and empower American citizens to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks. The goal of the campaign is to get the public involved and ultimately to increase levels of basic preparedness across the nation.
In an effort to promote federal workforce preparedness in the National Capital Region, the FEMA Office of National Capital Region Coordination is sponsoring its fourth annual National Preparedness Month Outreach Program Supporting collaboration with the DHS/FEMA Ready Campaign, Citizen Corps, and Federal Departments and Agency Emergency Managers throughout the National Capital Region. The goal of the National Preparedness Month Outreach is to raise awareness of local community preparedness by providing emergency preparedness information from the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Maryland. The National Preparedness Month Outreach Program complements the goals and objectives of the Ready Campaign and its Spanish language version Listo, by encouraging people to do four key things: be informed, make a plan, build a kit, and get involved in preparation for different types of emergencies that could occur.
National Preparedness Month staff personnel provide planning and coordination support prior to the event to federal workforce emergency managers who conduct a National Preparedness Outreach at their respective department/agencies.On the day of the event, personnel travel to the host location, set-up an informational booth/display and provide federal employees, as provide for any visiting members of the public, literature on family and individual emergency preparedness. In addition to receiving literature, subject-matter-experts will be on-site for the duration of the event to answer any emergency preparedness questions.
The National Preparedness Month Outreach initiative aligns with the strategic goals and mission of the Office of National Capital Region Coordination, to foster relationships throughout the National Capital Region while contributing to greater preparedness and readiness within the Federal workforce.
